The Midwest Asian American Students Union (MAASU) was started in response to a need for political unity among Asian American students in the Midwest. By 1990, there were more than 20 universities in the Midwest that had formed APA organizations. Some had been around for years; some were in their infancy. Students felt there needed to be an organization that would support the growth of these organizations and organize APA students in the Midwest for political activism.
Chronological History of MAASU
First organized meeting for MAASU | October 21, 1989 | Granville, Ohio
20 people attended this meeting from 6 schools and one community organization. The schools represented were as followed: Miami University, Michigan State University, Oberlin College, Ohio State University, Purdue University, and the University of Michigan. The community organization was the American Citizens for Justice (ACJ). This was a one-day meeting to discuss whether or not there was a need to start an organization to unite Asian American student organizations in the Midwest.
MAASU is incorporated in the state of Ohio | June 27, 1990
Articles of incorporation are submitted on June 26, 1990, and approved the next day, Charles Chang is established as the statutory agent.
Purdue Asian American Students/MAASU Joint Conference | October 1990 | Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
The first group of officers is formed. At this conference, MAASU held two workshops--one on leadership and the other an informational for the organization. 14 schools attended.
Midwest Aisan American Conference | March 1991 | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
MAASU held an informational session during which structure and officer positions were discussed. Elections were held and an interim ECC was elected.

During this retreat, a Constitution is established.
MAASU Leadership Retreat | October 1991 | Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
During the first-ever LR, the first roll call is completed. 11 schools attended
MAASU granted tax-exempt status | April 1992
MAASU is granted conditional tax-exempt status. MAASU will be reviewed to finalize tax-exempt status in June 1994. Papers are filed with the IRS in Cincinnati, OH.

This is the first conference that MAASU had equal partnership in creating an agenda for the conference. The ECC met with the Asian American Association of UIUC in January to plan for the event. The first election and transition of the ECC and Director occurs.
